The Deeper Wound
The problems with parish renewal programs... They're treating symptoms not the wounds. We want "practical solutions" and "quick fixes," but the deeper wound needs healing, not symptom mitigation.
The problem goes right to the heart of who we are as Catholics: We are a Eucharistic People, made for communion both vertical AND horizontal. Living the fullness of our faith requires us to be in close relationship with the brothers and sisters who share at the Eucharistic table with us.
We have lost that. We barely know each other. The basic life of the rank-and-file laity is much like the rest of the world: Sure we go to mass and try to avoid serioes sin. But, like the rest of the world, we are more or less ALONE. We receive the Eucharist but we are not by and large LIVING the communion we receive.
Healing this illness is a major inpatient procedure, comprehensive and lengthy. A full healing and recovery will require decades, maybe generations.
But what if there was a way to begin this extended procedure to effect complete healing and recovery, while still realizing unthinkable gains almost immediately?
